No field produces every season. It grows, it gives, and then it rests, sometimes for an entire winter, before it is ready to grow again.
No farmer calls that field lazy.
The belief that rest is failure
Yet many of us speak to ourselves as though rest were a character flaw. As though the moment we stop producing, we start failing. As though our worth is only as current as our last accomplished task.
This belief rarely serves anyone. It certainly hasn't served the version of you who is exhausted right now, still pushing, because some part of you is convinced that stopping means falling behind everyone who kept going.
Rest is part of the mechanism
But rest was never the opposite of progress. It is part of the mechanism that makes progress sustainable at all. Muscles rebuild during rest, not during exertion. Ideas often arrive in the shower, not at the desk. The field that rests through winter is the same field that produces abundantly come spring.
Permission to lie fallow
You are not a machine that simply needs to run longer to be more valuable. You are closer to that field โ needing seasons, needing pause, needing permission to lie fallow without apologizing for it.
If you have been pushing yourself past the point of good sense, treating exhaustion as proof of dedication, consider this your permission to stop, at least for today.
