The Wildflower Way

A wildflower does not apologize for blooming in an unexpected place — a reflection on self-compassion.

Nobody plants a wildflower.

It arrives on its own terms, in the crack of a sidewalk, the ditch beside the highway, the neglected corner of a field no one thought to tend. And it blooms there anyway, fully, without checking first whether the location was appropriate.

We rarely extend ourselves that same permission.

Instead we apologize for the shape our lives have taken. For healing slower than we hoped. For needing help. For the parts of us that grew a little wild because no one was there to prune them into something tidier.

The wildflower does not compare its petals to the roses in someone's garden. It has no interest in a garden at all. It is too busy being exactly what it is, in the one place it happened to take root.

Self-compassion often gets mistaken for self-indulgence, as though being gentle with yourself is a luxury you have to earn first. But a wildflower doesn't earn its right to bloom. It simply blooms, because that is what living things do when nothing is choking them for it.

You do not need permission to be exactly where you are right now, unfinished, a little unruly, still growing in directions no one planned for you.

Let today be the day you stop apologizing for the shape you took to survive.

You were never meant to look like the flowers in someone else's garden. You were only ever meant to bloom where you actually are.
