Walking Through Fog

Fog does not mean the road is gone. It only asks us to take the next gentle step.

Fog has a way of making a familiar road feel unrecognizable.

The same path you have walked a hundred times suddenly seems uncertain. The landmarks disappear. You can see only a few feet in front of you, and everything past that becomes guesswork.

It is tempting, in fog, to stop walking altogether. To wait until visibility returns before taking another step. But fog rarely clears on a schedule, and the road does not disappear just because you can't see all of it at once.

Hope, it turns out, does not require seeing the whole path. It only requires trusting that the next few feet are real, and walking them.

You do not need to know how the entire year unfolds to take today's step. You do not need certainty about the ending to keep moving through the middle. The fog is not evidence that you are lost. It is only evidence that you cannot see far right now — which is a very different thing.

Sailors have always known this. You keep the compass steady, you trust the instruments you cannot see beyond, and you move forward inch by inch until the world opens back up, the way it always eventually does.

Wherever you are walking through fog today, in your work, your health, your relationships, your own unclear future — you are allowed to keep going without demanding the whole view first.

The road is still there. You just have to trust the next few feet, one at a time.
